Mental Health and Stress in the Trades: What to Do When It Gets Too Much

Mental health is one of the less-discussed aspects of working in the trades — but the statistics are stark. Construction has one of the highest suicide rates of any industry in both the UK and US. Long hours, physical strain, financial pressure, and the isolation of sole-trader working are real and cumulative. This is what to do when it gets too much.
The Reality in the Trades
A 2023 study by the HSE found that construction workers in the UK are three times more likely to die by suicide than the national average. In the US, the construction industry has the highest rate of suicide deaths of any occupation tracked by the Centers for Disease Control. These are not abstract statistics — they reflect the pressures that tradespeople face daily and the fact that asking for help is less normalised in the industry than it needs to be.
Signs to Watch For
Persistent low mood or irritability, withdrawal from family and friends, increased alcohol or substance use, difficulty sleeping, loss of interest in work you used to find satisfying — these are all signs that mental health support is needed. Recognising them in yourself matters. So does recognising them in colleagues.

Getting Help
In the UK, the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity provides free mental health support specifically for construction workers and tradespeople — 24/7 helpline (0345 605 1956). The Samaritans (116 123) are available any time. Your GP is always the first port of call for ongoing mental health difficulties.
In the US, the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP) provides resources for construction workers. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by call or text.
The Business Pressure Side
Financial stress is a major driver of mental health difficulties for sole-trader tradespeople. Reducing administrative overhead — faster quoting, less chasing for invoice payments, better cash flow — removes some of the pressure. It does not solve everything, but it removes friction that compounds stress over time.

Long hours, physical strain, financial pressure, isolation in sole-trader working, and a culture that discourages asking for help all contribute. The construction industry has disproportionately high suicide rates in both the UK and US.
